I agree with Senator Douglas that the Southern War for Independence was wrong and illegal, but there was some justification for secession. The prohibition of the extension of slavery into the territories was unconstitutional, a high tariff would ruin the South, a homestead act would eliminate lands that could be saved for the Southern plantation system, internal improvements at federal expense would force the South to pay for the building of a railway to the Pacific using a southern route, and a national bank to drain the wealth of the South, these were the five planks of the platform of the Republican Party. The party nominated two northern candidates and the South was outvoted in both the House and the Senate. The Republican Party was not even on the ballot in nine of the fifteen southern states.

This is a good flag to display, as on a wall or other protected place. If one wishes to fly it outside, it may soon fray at the unattached border if there is more than a bit of wind.
